Most modern programming involves some sort of interaction with a database, even if the database is as simple as plain text files in a directory structure (yes, even that can be considered a database!). For instance, companies often require the following types of database-enabled applications:

  • Client database - for maintaining a unique identity for people who do business with the company.
  • Transaction database - for keeping track of what transactions have been initiated or completed
  • Subscription database - for allowing current subscribers to have access to certain benefits
  • Support ticket database - this allows companies to see what kinds of issues come up more frequently, and allows technicians to share their knowledge

Transparen offers support for Open Source software, such as the following two popular Open Source databases:

  • MySQL
  • Postgresql

The main difference between MySQL and Postgresql is that MySQL is faster for development, but Postgresql contains more enterprise features such as ACID compliant transactions, the ability to write procedures, support for foreign keys, and more.

Other Open Source databases include:

  • Firebird (not to be confused with FireFox, the web browser)
  • Ingres

RIMOUSKI (Quebec) - During his visit to Rimouski today, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced an investment in the order of $7.3 million in the ports of Rimouski and Matane. The invested funds will go toward different repairs that will maintain the safety of the facilities and keep the ports in optimal operating condition.

The first steps will involve finalizing the different preliminary studies required, establishing the road alignment, surveying, preparing a contaminated material management plan, conducting an environmental impact assessment and completing the final plans and specifications.

SAGUENAY ? The governments of Canada and Quebec are today announcing the opening of a rebuilt 4-lane divided stretch of Highway 175 between km 208 and km 213, near the northern boundary of the Laurentian Wildlife Reserve, and between km 219 and 227, at the entrance of Saguenay.
